8 Days Kilimanjaro · Northern Circuit

8 Days Kilimanjaro · Northern Circuit

Complete 8-Day Itinerary
8 Days Kilimanjaro · Northern Circuit

8 mountain days on the Northern Circuit route. Review each daily stage, then request the rate for your group. Arrival transfers and hotel nights are agreed separately.

The Northern Circuit starts on the western side and then travels around Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes before reaching the final ascent from School Hut. Its camp sequence includes the Shira side and the northern stops around Moir, Buffalo and Third Cave. The final descent in the programmes below uses the Mweka trail.

The route spreads the approach over more mountain days than several of the shorter southern programmes. Its appeal is the different camp sequence and the time on the northern traverse, rather than a guarantee of a particular summit result. Read each daily stage to see how the western approach, northern camps and summit day are arranged.

The crater option adds a specialist overnight inside the summit area and requires separate confirmation of access and support arrangements. Camping equipment, meals, road transfers and hotel nights are stated in the written quotation. The guide reviews the final departure timings and the summit plan according to the conditions and the group.

  • A complete daily mountain programme
  • Named overnight camps or huts
  • The summit approach and return descent
  • Transfers and hotel nights agreed around the climb
Day 1

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Leave Moshi for the western side of the mountain and complete the park formalities at Londorossi. Road access to the walking start depends on local conditions. From the trailhead, the first stage climbs through forest towards Mti Mkubwa, also called Big Tree Camp. The forest trail gives you time to get used to the walking pace and organise the clothing, water and equipment carried in your daypack.

Follow the marked path with the guide and take breaks along the route rather than rushing to camp. On arrival at Mti Mkubwa, settle into the tented campsite and check the arrangement for your overnight bag and sleeping equipment. The evening is used for the next-day briefing and preparation for the move out of the forest towards the Shira Plateau.

Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Day 2

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Leave the forest camp and climb towards the Shira Plateau. As height increases, the vegetation changes from larger trees to heath and more open moorland. The walking is generally more exposed than on the previous forest stage. Carry the layers needed for changes in wind, cloud and rain, and allow time for the group to progress steadily.

The route leads to Shira 1 Camp, where the landscape opens around the western side of the mountain. On a clear day there are broad views across the plateau and towards Kibo. After arrival, use the remaining afternoon for camp routines and preparation for the following day. Any additional walk from camp is arranged by the guide within the planned schedule.

Overnight: Shira 1 Camp

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Day 3

Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut Camp

Continue from the Shira side towards Moir Hut. Depending on the programme, this stage either starts at Shira 1 or crosses from Shira 2 before reaching the northern camp area. The walking is through open moorland and higher volcanic terrain, with wide views when the weather clears.

Arrive at the Moir campsite and settle into the tented accommodation. This stop marks the move away from the busier southern circuit and towards the northern side of the mountain. The following stage continues to Buffalo Camp. Discuss any local walk with the guide and prepare the layers needed for the exposed northern traverse. The daily camp sequence shown here is the one to use when comparing the route with a southern-circuit Lemosho climb.

Overnight: Moir Hut Camp

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Day 4

Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

Leave Moir Hut and continue across the northern slopes towards Buffalo Camp. The route follows a less direct line to the summit than the southern circuit, with open terrain, changing views and sections of ascent and descent along the traverse. The walking takes you around the mountain rather than straight towards a summit base camp.

The guide organises rest stops and lunch along the day’s route. Reach Buffalo Camp and settle into the campsite before the next-day briefing. The northern programme places extra walking days between the western approach and the final ascent. Keep the camp sequence in mind when choosing the itinerary: some shorter options continue towards School Hut differently, while the programme shown here follows its own listed overnight stops.

Distance / timing: Distance: approximately 12 km. Time: 5–7 hours.

Overnight: Buffalo Camp

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Day 5

Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp

Continue from Buffalo towards Third Cave Camp on the northern side. The day follows the highland traverse through increasingly open terrain, with little forest cover and broad views when cloud allows. The route includes a combination of descents, undulations and climbs rather than a single uninterrupted uphill section.

Take breaks along the route and continue with the guide to the campsite. At Third Cave, organise the equipment needed for the approach to School Hut and review the following day’s schedule. This northern camp is part of the longer circuit and should not be confused with an overnight stop on a different short Rongai programme. The full sequence of stages gives the clearest picture of how this climb is arranged.

Distance / timing: Distance: approximately 8 km. Time: 4–5 hours.

Overnight: Third Cave Camp

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Day 6

Third Cave Camp to School Hut

Leave the northern camp and climb towards School Hut. The final approach is through high-altitude desert, with increasingly sparse vegetation and exposed ground. Maintain the walking pace set by the guide and keep windproof and warm layers available. The day leads to the last overnight stop before the summit stage on this northern approach.

At School Hut, prepare clothing, the headlamp and the contents of the summit daypack. The guide reviews the planned ascent towards the crater rim and the later descent, including the different arrangement used when a crater overnight is part of the confirmed programme. Meals and rest are organised around the departure plan. Weather, access and the condition of the group determine the final timings.

Overnight: School Hut

Day 7

School Hut to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Leave Kibo Hut or School Hut according to the programme for the overnight ascent towards the crater rim. The northern and eastern approach reaches the Gilman’s Point area before continuing towards Uhuru Peak when the guide and conditions allow. The group’s progress, weather and route conditions determine the actual turning points and timing.

After the summit section, descend along the return route towards Mweka Camp. The descent is a substantial part of the day, not a short transfer after the ascent, so time needs to be allowed for breaks and the changing terrain. Keep the group organised and follow the guide’s decisions during the return. The planned overnight stop is Mweka Camp, below the summit base area. On arrival, organise the equipment needed for the following morning’s final stage.

Distance / timing: Distance: approximately 15 km. Time: 10–14 hours.

Overnight: Mweka Camp

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Day 8

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi

After breakfast, leave Mweka Camp and descend through the lower vegetation zones towards Mweka Gate. The path returns into the forest, where the ground can be wet and slippery even after clear weather higher on the mountain. Take time on steps and muddy sections and stay with the guide until the walking stage is complete.

At the gate, complete the park exit formalities and meet the arranged road transfer. The mountain programme ends with the return towards Moshi. A post-climb hotel night, a flight connection or an onward safari should be listed separately in the quotation so that the timing is clear. If you are continuing to another destination, allow for the walking descent and road transfer rather than treating this as a free day.

Distance / timing: Distance: approximately 10 km. Time: 3–4 hours.

Overnight: Post-climb accommodation, if booked separately

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Before you book

Before the climb

Plan to reach Moshi with time for the briefing and equipment check before the first mountain day. Share your flight details and hotel requirements so that the arrival transfer and the start of the trek fit together. The quotation should say clearly which hotel nights are included and which are separate.

Accommodation and meals

Marangu uses shared mountain huts. The other walking routes use designated tented camps; the cycling programme follows its own overnight arrangements. The proposed mountain meal plan is breakfast, lunch and dinner on full climbing days. The confirmed services, food requirements and drinking-water arrangements are listed in your quotation.

Equipment and daily luggage

Keep the clothing and equipment needed during the walk in your daypack, including suitable layers for rain, wind and changes in temperature. Overnight luggage, personal sleeping equipment and any hired items need to be agreed before departure. Ask for the equipment list for your selected programme and clarify what is supplied rather than assuming that every item is part of the starting price.

End of the mountain programme

The final day includes the walking descent, park exit formalities and the arranged road transfer. A hotel night after the climb, airport drop-off or onward safari must fit that schedule. Give the team your departure details before confirming a flight connection so that the final transfer can be planned realistically.
