Complete 7-Day Itinerary
7 Days Kilimanjaro · Rongai

7 mountain days on the Rongai route. Review each daily stage, then request the rate for your group. Arrival transfers and hotel nights are agreed separately.

Rongai approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern slopes and then reaches Kibo for the summit ascent. The longer programmes use overnight stops around Kikelewa and Mawenzi Tarn before crossing towards Kibo. The descent follows the eastern side through Horombo and Marangu Gate, so the starting and finishing gates are different.

The short direct programme and the longer Mawenzi Tarn options are not simply the same walk with different labels. Their camp sequences differ, and the seven-day option includes a further day around Mawenzi Tarn before the crossing to Kibo. Compare those overnight stops and the time spent on the mountain when choosing a route.

The northern camps use tents, with the exact accommodation and support arrangements stated in the quotation. Arrival in Tanzania, pre-climb accommodation and any onward safari or beach stay are arranged around the mountain programme. The final day still includes a long walking descent and a road transfer; it should be allowed for when planning flights.

  • A complete daily mountain programme
  • Named overnight camps or huts
  • The summit approach and return descent
  • Transfers and hotel nights agreed around the climb
Day 1

Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

The transfer takes you to the northern starting area of Kilimanjaro, near the Kenyan border. After entry formalities, begin the walk towards Simba Camp. The approach passes cultivated land and forest before reaching more open country. This is a different starting landscape from the southern routes, and the views become broader as the path gains height.

The first stage establishes the walking routine for the climb. Keep the pace comfortable, organise your daypack and tell the guide if you need a stop. At Simba Camp, unpack the equipment needed for the evening and prepare for the next day’s ascent. The programme uses camping accommodation; the tent, mattress, sleeping bag arrangements and mountain meal plan are confirmed as part of the quotation.

Day 2

Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Continue from Simba through the open northern slopes towards Kikelewa Camp. Forest cover becomes less important as the route gains height, with heath and moorland taking its place. The trail crosses a quieter side of the mountain and gradually brings the group closer to Mawenzi.

Walking breaks and lunch are arranged along the stage, with time to take in the landscape without losing sight of the day’s destination. Arrive at Kikelewa and settle into the tented campsite. Organise warmer clothing for the evening and prepare for the climb towards Mawenzi Tarn. The route described here uses the overnight stops listed in this programme; other Rongai options have different camp sequences.

Overnight: Kikelewa Camp

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Day 3

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Leave Kikelewa and climb towards Mawenzi Tarn. The path brings you into higher, more exposed terrain near the rugged Mawenzi massif. The walking stage is not a climb to Mawenzi’s summit; the destination is the campsite used by the Rongai programme. As you gain height, vegetation becomes lower and the weather may feel colder and windier.

Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn and settle into camp. The longer option adds an acclimatisation day here, while the shorter programme continues across the Saddle towards Kibo on the following day. Use the afternoon to organise the next stage’s equipment and understand the departure plan. Any short walk near camp is kept within the guide’s planned route and the conditions on the day.

Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Day 4

Acclimatization at Mawenzi Tarn Hut

Spend a second night at Mawenzi Tarn. The morning programme can include a guided walk on the nearby slopes followed by a return to camp, leaving the overnight accommodation at the same height. The guide selects the route and duration according to the group’s condition and the weather rather than requiring everyone to reach the same additional high point.

Use the afternoon to prepare for the crossing towards Kibo. Check the contents of the daypack, organise warmer layers and review the next stage with the guide. This day creates a clear break between the approach to Mawenzi Tarn and the walk across the Saddle. It is one of the useful differences to consider when comparing this seven-day Rongai option with the shorter programmes.

Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Day 5

Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

Leave the northern camp and continue towards Kibo. From Mawenzi Tarn, the route crosses the broad Saddle between the Mawenzi and Kibo massifs; the direct cave-camp option reaches Kibo from its own northern approach. The ground is open and vegetation is sparse, with little shelter from wind and changing temperatures.

Reach Kibo Hut and prepare for the summit stage. The guide reviews the climb towards Gilman’s Point and the continuation along the crater rim, together with the descent towards Horombo. Use the time before departure to organise the necessary layers and equipment and to rest as the programme allows. This is the final overnight stop before the summit ascent in the Rongai schedule.

Day 6

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Leave Kibo Hut or School Hut according to the programme for the overnight ascent towards the crater rim. The northern and eastern approach reaches the Gilman’s Point area before continuing towards Uhuru Peak when the guide and conditions allow. The group’s progress, weather and route conditions determine the actual turning points and timing.

After the summit section, descend along the return route towards Horombo Hut. The descent is a substantial part of the day, not a short transfer after the ascent, so time needs to be allowed for breaks and the changing terrain. Keep the group organised and follow the guide’s decisions during the return. The planned overnight stop is Horombo Hut, below the summit base area. On arrival, organise the equipment needed for the following morning’s final stage.

Distance / timing: Distance: approximately 16 km. Time: 10–14 hours.

Overnight: Horombo Hut

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Day 7

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi

Leave Horombo and follow the Marangu trail down through moorland and forest towards the gate. The route passes back through the lower hut area, reversing the change in landscape experienced during the ascent. The descent covers a significant distance, and breaks are arranged according to the walking progress of the group.

At Marangu Gate, complete the exit formalities and meet the transfer for the return towards Moshi. This is the final mountain stage for both the Marangu climb and the Rongai programme that uses the eastern descent. Post-climb accommodation and onward travel are arranged separately. Let the team know your departure plans before booking so that the return transfer and any hotel night can be coordinated properly.

Before you book

Before the climb

Plan to reach Moshi with time for the briefing and equipment check before the first mountain day. Share your flight details and hotel requirements so that the arrival transfer and the start of the trek fit together. The quotation should say clearly which hotel nights are included and which are separate.

Accommodation and meals

Marangu uses shared mountain huts. The other walking routes use designated tented camps; the cycling programme follows its own overnight arrangements. The proposed mountain meal plan is breakfast, lunch and dinner on full climbing days. The confirmed services, food requirements and drinking-water arrangements are listed in your quotation.

Equipment and daily luggage

Keep the clothing and equipment needed during the walk in your daypack, including suitable layers for rain, wind and changes in temperature. Overnight luggage, personal sleeping equipment and any hired items need to be agreed before departure. Ask for the equipment list for your selected programme and clarify what is supplied rather than assuming that every item is part of the starting price.

End of the mountain programme

The final day includes the walking descent, park exit formalities and the arranged road transfer. A hotel night after the climb, airport drop-off or onward safari must fit that schedule. Give the team your departure details before confirming a flight connection so that the final transfer can be planned realistically.
