6 Days Kilimanjaro · Umbwe Western Breach

6 Days Kilimanjaro · Umbwe Western Breach

Complete 6-Day Itinerary
6 Days Kilimanjaro · Umbwe Western Breach

6 mountain days on the Umbwe route. Review each daily stage, then request the rate for your group. Arrival transfers and hotel nights are agreed separately.

Umbwe takes a steep forest approach to the southern side of Kilimanjaro, reaching Barranco after the initial forest camps. From Barranco, the programme depends on the selected summit approach. The southern circuit continues to Karanga and Barafu, while the specialist Western Breach itinerary uses Arrow Glacier and a crater overnight.

These approaches should not be treated as interchangeable. The Western Breach and crater programme needs specific confirmation of access, support arrangements, conditions and suitability for the group. The daily stages below show the actual route intended for this package, so check the camps as well as the package title.

All listed durations refer to mountain stages. Transfers, hotel nights and equipment arrangements are agreed separately in the quotation. The short and steep approach makes careful consideration of the full programme important; no summit outcome or fixed walking speed is promised.

This programme includes the Western Breach and a crater overnight. It is a specialist route; access, conditions and the final programme must be reviewed before confirmation.

  • A complete daily mountain programme
  • Named overnight camps or huts
  • The summit approach and return descent
  • Transfers and hotel nights agreed around the climb
Day 1

Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

After registration at Umbwe Gate, follow the forest trail towards Umbwe Cave Camp. The Umbwe approach gains height quickly and includes steep, uneven walking. It is important to stay with the guide and to allow enough time for the group to negotiate roots, slopes and narrow sections. Forest cover can make the route damp, especially after rain.

The first camp is reached within the forested approach. Once the walking stage is complete, organise dry clothing and overnight equipment, then review the next day’s route with the guide. Umbwe has a shorter approach to the higher southern camps than several other routes, so the whole programme should be considered when selecting it. This itinerary is not presented as a substitute for an individual assessment of climbing readiness.

Distance / timing: Distance: approximately 11 km. Time: 5–7 hours.

Overnight: Umbwe Cave Camp

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Day 2

Umbwe Cave Campsite to Barranco Camp

Continue up the Umbwe trail from the forest camp towards more open ground. As you climb, the forest gives way to lower vegetation and then moorland. The approach remains steep in places, and the pace should remain controlled. The day brings you towards the southern side of Kibo and the Barranco Valley.

Arrive at Barranco Camp and settle into the campsite. This is the point where the following stages depend on the particular Umbwe programme: the southern circuit goes towards Karanga and Barafu, while the specialist Western Breach option uses Arrow Glacier. Check the route named in your daily schedule rather than assuming that all Umbwe itineraries share the same summit approach.

Overnight: Barranco Camp

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Day 3

Barranco Camp to Arrow Glacier Camp

Leave Barranco and follow the specialist approach towards Arrow Glacier rather than continuing on the southern circuit to Karanga and Barafu. The route gains height across sparse alpine terrain and brings the group towards the Western Breach side of Kibo. This is a distinct programme and requires the correct route arrangements before the climb begins.

At Arrow Glacier Camp, organise the equipment needed for the next stage and review the guide’s plan carefully. The following ascent involves the Western Breach and is not presented as an ordinary walking variation that can be added casually during the trip. The confirmed itinerary must take account of access, current conditions, the group’s experience and the support arrangements for the specialist route.

Distance / timing: Distance: approximately 5 km. Time: 3–4 hours.

Overnight: Arrow Glacier Camp

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Day 4

Arrow Glacier Camp to Crater Camp (via Western Breach)

The planned stage leaves Arrow Glacier and ascends the Western Breach towards the crater area. This is a specialist section of the programme, with rocky and exposed ground. The guide determines the departure time and progression according to the conditions and the arrangements made for the climb. Stay with the group and follow the agreed route.

The programme includes an overnight at Crater Camp before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. A crater overnight is a different undertaking from reaching the summit and immediately descending to a lower camp. Access, permissions, equipment and the final daily plan must be confirmed in advance. If the specialist route cannot be confirmed, this itinerary must be revised before booking rather than silently substituting another approach.

Distance / timing: Distance: approximately 4 km. Time: 6–7 hours.

Overnight: Crater Camp (via Western Breach)

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Day 5

Crater Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Leave Crater Camp and continue towards Uhuru Peak, subject to the guide’s plan and the conditions. This stage follows the specialist crater overnight rather than starting from one of the usual outer base camps. The group needs the equipment and arrangements confirmed for this programme, and the final summit decision remains with the guide on the mountain.

After the summit section, begin the descent towards the southern route and continue to Mweka Camp as listed. Allow time for breaks and for the long drop in altitude over the course of the day. The night is spent at Mweka rather than in the crater. Review the following morning’s final descent and keep the clothing needed for the lower, wetter forest section accessible.

Distance / timing: Distance: approximately 12 km. Time: 8–10 hours.

Overnight: Mweka Camp

Meals: Proposed: breakfast, lunch and dinner; final day arrangements in your quotation

Day 6

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi

After breakfast, leave Mweka Camp and descend through the lower vegetation zones towards Mweka Gate. The path returns into the forest, where the ground can be wet and slippery even after clear weather higher on the mountain. Take time on steps and muddy sections and stay with the guide until the walking stage is complete.

At the gate, complete the park exit formalities and meet the arranged road transfer. The mountain programme ends with the return towards Moshi. A post-climb hotel night, a flight connection or an onward safari should be listed separately in the quotation so that the timing is clear. If you are continuing to another destination, allow for the walking descent and road transfer rather than treating this as a free day.

Overnight: Post-climb accommodation, if booked separately

Before you book

Before the climb

Plan to reach Moshi with time for the briefing and equipment check before the first mountain day. Share your flight details and hotel requirements so that the arrival transfer and the start of the trek fit together. The quotation should say clearly which hotel nights are included and which are separate.

Accommodation and meals

Marangu uses shared mountain huts. The other walking routes use designated tented camps; the cycling programme follows its own overnight arrangements. The proposed mountain meal plan is breakfast, lunch and dinner on full climbing days. The confirmed services, food requirements and drinking-water arrangements are listed in your quotation.

Equipment and daily luggage

Keep the clothing and equipment needed during the walk in your daypack, including suitable layers for rain, wind and changes in temperature. Overnight luggage, personal sleeping equipment and any hired items need to be agreed before departure. Ask for the equipment list for your selected programme and clarify what is supplied rather than assuming that every item is part of the starting price.

End of the mountain programme

The final day includes the walking descent, park exit formalities and the arranged road transfer. A hotel night after the climb, airport drop-off or onward safari must fit that schedule. Give the team your departure details before confirming a flight connection so that the final transfer can be planned realistically.
