Complete 5-Day Itinerary
5 Days Kilimanjaro · Marangu

5 mountain days on the Marangu route. Review each daily stage, then request the rate for your group. Arrival transfers and hotel nights are agreed separately.

Marangu approaches Kilimanjaro from the eastern side, using shared huts at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo. The route climbs through forest, heath and moorland before reaching the open high-altitude ground below Kibo. The final ascent uses the Gilman’s Point side of the crater rim, and the descent follows the Marangu trail back towards the gate.

The main difference between the shorter and longer programmes is the extra night at Horombo. That day allows a local walk followed by a return to the same hut before continuing higher. Hut accommodation does not make the climb a low-altitude walk: the route still reaches the same summit area as the camping programmes. Compare the daily sequence and available time rather than choosing only by the type of bed.

The programme below counts mountain days. Arrival transfers, hotel nights before and after the trek, equipment hire and departure arrangements are listed separately in your written quotation. Shared hut space, the meal plan and the final group arrangements are confirmed for the booking.

  • A complete daily mountain programme
  • Named overnight camps or huts
  • The summit approach and return descent
  • Transfers and hotel nights agreed around the climb
Day 1

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Transfer to Marangu Gate for registration and the start of the walk to Mandara. The route passes through montane forest on a marked trail, with shade, forest vegetation and occasional openings along the way. The ground can be slippery after rain, so take time on uneven sections and keep a light rain layer within reach. The guide will organise stops according to the progress of the group.

The day ends at Mandara Hut. Marangu accommodation is in shared mountain huts rather than the tented camps used on the other routes; sleeping arrangements and bedding requirements should be checked before departure. Use the afternoon to settle in and prepare for the longer walk towards Horombo. An optional short local walk is only added when time and the guide’s programme allow it.

Day 2

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Leave Mandara Hut and continue above the denser forest towards the heath and moorland. The trail climbs steadily, with the vegetation becoming lower and the landscape more open as you gain height. When cloud clears, there can be views towards Mawenzi and Kibo. The guide will set the walking pace and organise breaks along this longer stage.

Arrive at Horombo Hut and settle into the shared hut accommodation. The extra height is noticeable compared with Mandara, so keep the rest of the afternoon simple and use it to prepare for the next stage. In the longer Marangu programme, another night is spent here for an acclimatisation day; the shorter option continues towards Kibo on the following morning.

Day 3

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Leave Horombo and follow the route towards Kibo Hut. The surroundings become progressively barer as the trail reaches the high-altitude desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. The walking stage is exposed, and the gradual-looking ground should not be mistaken for a reason to increase the pace. Breaks are taken according to the guide’s schedule and the needs of the group.

At Kibo Hut, organise warm clothing, the headlamp and the equipment needed for the summit stage. Meals and rest are timed around the guide’s departure plan. The briefing covers the climb towards Gilman’s Point, the crater-rim section to Uhuru Peak and the return descent. The overnight ascent is reviewed on the day, taking account of the weather and the group rather than treating the itinerary as a guarantee.

Day 4

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Leave Kibo Hut or School Hut according to the programme for the overnight ascent towards the crater rim. The northern and eastern approach reaches the Gilman’s Point area before continuing towards Uhuru Peak when the guide and conditions allow. The group’s progress, weather and route conditions determine the actual turning points and timing.

After the summit section, descend along the return route towards Horombo Hut. The descent is a substantial part of the day, not a short transfer after the ascent, so time needs to be allowed for breaks and the changing terrain. Keep the group organised and follow the guide’s decisions during the return. The planned overnight stop is Horombo Hut, below the summit base area. On arrival, organise the equipment needed for the following morning’s final stage.

Day 5

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi

Leave Horombo and follow the Marangu trail down through moorland and forest towards the gate. The route passes back through the lower hut area, reversing the change in landscape experienced during the ascent. The descent covers a significant distance, and breaks are arranged according to the walking progress of the group.

At Marangu Gate, complete the exit formalities and meet the transfer for the return towards Moshi. This is the final mountain stage for both the Marangu climb and the Rongai programme that uses the eastern descent. Post-climb accommodation and onward travel are arranged separately. Let the team know your departure plans before booking so that the return transfer and any hotel night can be coordinated properly.

Before you book

Before the climb

Plan to reach Moshi with time for the briefing and equipment check before the first mountain day. Share your flight details and hotel requirements so that the arrival transfer and the start of the trek fit together. The quotation should say clearly which hotel nights are included and which are separate.

Accommodation and meals

Marangu uses shared mountain huts. The other walking routes use designated tented camps; the cycling programme follows its own overnight arrangements. The proposed mountain meal plan is breakfast, lunch and dinner on full climbing days. The confirmed services, food requirements and drinking-water arrangements are listed in your quotation.

Equipment and daily luggage

Keep the clothing and equipment needed during the walk in your daypack, including suitable layers for rain, wind and changes in temperature. Overnight luggage, personal sleeping equipment and any hired items need to be agreed before departure. Ask for the equipment list for your selected programme and clarify what is supplied rather than assuming that every item is part of the starting price.

End of the mountain programme

The final day includes the walking descent, park exit formalities and the arranged road transfer. A hotel night after the climb, airport drop-off or onward safari must fit that schedule. Give the team your departure details before confirming a flight connection so that the final transfer can be planned realistically.
