Direct from Moshi to the wild. No Arusha overnight needed. Perfect for Kilimanjaro climbers, volunteers, and travelers starting their trip in Moshi.

Your 5-Day Serengeti and Ngorongoro Safari Itinerary from Moshi

Efficient routing, early starts, and expertly timed drives to maximize your wildlife time. No Arusha overnight โ€“ just direct from Moshi to the wild.

Day 1

Early Start: Moshi to Ngorongoro Crater Rim

Your adventure begins early โ€“ around 6:00 AM โ€“ as your guide picks you up from your Moshi hotel. The early start is intentional: the drive to Ngorongoro takes approximately 5-6 hours, and we want you to arrive with plenty of time for an afternoon game drive. You'll travel through the Same region, passing through Maasai lands and watching the landscape shift from the lush slopes of Kilimanjaro to the drier acacia woodlands of the north. A stop at the Ngorongoro Crater viewpoint is a must โ€“ the first glimpse of the vast caldera never fails to impress. By mid-afternoon, you'll reach the crater rim and check into your lodge. Depending on arrival time, you may have time for a short game drive along the rim or simply settle in, enjoy the views, and prepare for tomorrow's descent into the crater. Dinner and overnight at your lodge on the crater rim.

Drive Time: ~5-6 hours from Moshi

Game Viewing: Afternoon along crater rim (optional)

Accommodation: Lodge on Ngorongoro Crater rim

Day 2

Ngorongoro Crater Tour & Transfer to Central Serengeti

Wake up early for breakfast, then descend 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater floor. The descent is an experience in itself โ€“ the road winds down the crater wall, and suddenly you're on the floor, surrounded by wildlife. Lions nap on the grass, hyenas lope past, and if you're lucky, a black rhino browses in the distance. The concentration of animals here is staggering โ€“ in just a few hours, you might see more species than in days elsewhere. Enjoy a picnic lunch by the hippo pool, watching these massive creatures wallow and graze. After your crater tour, you'll ascend the walls and continue your trip toward the Serengeti National Park. By late afternoon, you'll arrive at your lodge or camp in the central Seronera area, perfectly positioned for tomorrow's full day of game drives. Settle in, enjoy dinner, and fall asleep to the sounds of the wild.

Day 3

Full Day in Serengeti National Park

This is the day you came for. You're up before dawn, coffee in hand, as your guide scans the horizon. The first light turns the plains gold, and within minutes you might spot lions stirring, hyenas returning from a night hunt, or a leopard settling into a tree. With a full day ahead, there's no rush. Your guide carries a picnic lunch, so you can eat wherever the wildlife takes you โ€“ perhaps by the Seronera River, watching hippos wallow, or under a shady acacia. You'll explore the central Serengeti โ€“ the rocky kopjes where lions love to lounge, the riverine forests where leopards hide, the open grasslands where cheetahs hunt. You can linger at sightings, return to a favorite spot, or simply sit and watch the world go by. As the day cools, you'll continue exploring until sunset, when you return to your lodge with memories that will last a lifetime.

Second Full Day in Serengeti โ€“ Deeper Exploration

One day in the Serengeti shows you the highlights. Two days allows you to understand the place. Today you might venture further afield โ€“ perhaps toward the Western Corridor or into less-visited areas your guide knows from years of experience. You'll notice things you missed yesterday: the way a zebra foal stays close to its mother, the patience of a crocodile waiting at a crossing point, the intricate social dynamics of a hyena clan. With a second day, you can return to a favorite spot and see how the light changes it, or linger at a kill site to watch the aftermath unfold. By evening, you'll feel not like a visitor, but like a temporary resident of this remarkable ecosystem. Return to your lodge for a final night in the Serengeti.

Day 5

Serengeti to Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport

After breakfast, you'll begin your trip back. You have two options depending on your travel plans. If you're flying out, your guide will drive you directly to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), arriving with plenty of time for your onward flight. If you're staying in Arusha or continuing your Tanzanian adventure, you'll be dropped at your Arusha hotel. The drive takes approximately 5-6 hours, with a stop for lunch along the way. As you travel, you'll have time to reflect on the past five days โ€“ the lions, the elephants, the endless plains, and the crater that holds 25,000 animals. Your 5-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari from Moshi concludes here, but the memories will stay with you forever.

When to Plan Your Safari from Moshi

Dry Season (June - October)

Wildlife congregates around water sources, making game viewing exceptional. The grass is short, visibility is excellent, and the weather is sunny and mild. This is peak season for good reason โ€“ and the best time for climbers finishing Kilimanjaro in the dry season.

Green Season (November - May)

Lush landscapes, dramatic skies, and fewer vehicles. January-February is calving season in the southern Serengeti โ€“ thousands of newborn wildebeest and the predators that follow. A beautiful time to visit after a wet-season Kilimanjaro climb.

June-Oct

Peak wildlife viewing

Jan-Feb

Calving season

Mar-May

Best value, lush landscapes

Nov-Dec

Short rains, fewer crowds

Ngorongoro Crater offers the highest wildlife density in Africa. Approximately 25,000 large animals live here, including the rare black rhino. In a single morning, you're likely to see lions, hyenas, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, and hippos.

Serengeti National Park needs no introduction. Lions are commonly spotted on the rocky kopjes, leopards in the riverine forests, and cheetahs on the open plains. The park supports massive herds of zebra, wildebeest, and gazelle.

Seasonal Note: From July to October, you may witness parts of the Great Migration in the Serengeti. From December to March, the calving season in the southern Serengeti offers incredible predator-prey action. Your guide will know where to go based on the time of year.

Your Safari Supports Conservation

Every park fee you pay flows back into protecting Tanzania's wildlife. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro ecosystems exist today because tourism creates economic value in preserving them. Your visit funds anti-poaching patrols, community development projects, and scientific research.
