“A successful migration safari is not only about reaching the Mara River. It is about giving yourself enough time to follow the herds, wait patiently and let nature decide what happens next.”
The 7 Day Mara River Crossing Safari is designed for travellers who want to experience the best of northern Tanzania while keeping the main focus on the Great Migration in Northern Serengeti. The route combines a classic road safari through Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Central Serengeti with an extended stay around Kogatende and the Mara River.
The safari is arranged as a drive-in and flight-out trip. Travelling by road at the beginning allows you to enjoy the changing landscapes and wildlife areas between Arusha and Serengeti. Flying out from Kogatende on the final day avoids the long drive back and gives you more valuable time in the migration region. Depending on your wider Tanzania holiday, the scheduled flight can take you to Arusha or continue to Zanzibar.
July to October is normally the most suitable period for this Northern Serengeti safari. During these months, large herds of wildebeest and zebras may gather across the northern plains and near different Mara River crossing points. Thomson's gazelles, Grant's gazelles and eland may also move through the wider ecosystem, while lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and crocodiles take advantage of the seasonal concentration of prey.
Four nights in Northern Serengeti give your guide time to follow recent herd reports, visit more than one river section and explore the surrounding plains. This creates a more realistic opportunity to witness a wildebeest river crossing than a rushed one-night visit, while still allowing you to enjoy resident wildlife when the herds are waiting or moving elsewhere.

Why Four Nights in Northern Serengeti Matter
The Great Migration does not follow a fixed daily schedule. A herd can remain on one side of the river, separate into smaller groups or move many kilometres overnight. Four nights give you three focused days for migration tracking after reaching Kogatende, reducing the pressure to see everything in a single afternoon.
- More time to follow current herd movement around Kogatende, Wogakuria, Lamai and the Mara River.
- Opportunities to visit different crossing points instead of waiting in one crowded place.
- Flexible game drives for photographers, families, couples, solo travellers and private groups.
- Strong chances to see resident lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes and buffaloes even when no crossing occurs.
- A flight from Kogatende saves a long return trip and protects your final safari morning.
