The perfect family escape: 6 days of wildlife adventure across Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro, plus 3 days of beach bliss in Zanzibar. Designed for families with children.

Your 10-Day Family Safari & Zanzibar Itinerary

1 day arrival, 6 days exploring Tanzania's most iconic wildlife destinations, then fly to Zanzibar for 3 days of beach relaxation before heading home.

Day 1

Arrival in Arusha – Gateway to the North

Karibu Tanzania – Welcome! Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), our representative will greet your family with a warm smile and a sign bearing your name. You'll be transferred to your family-friendly hotel in Arusha, a vibrant town nestled at the foot of Mount Meru. The rest of the day is yours to relax after your flight – the hotel has a swimming pool perfect for children to burn off energy after the long trip. In the evening, your guide will meet your family for a pre-safari briefing, going over the upcoming adventure in a way that gets the kids excited. Enjoy a family dinner at the hotel, anticipating the incredible trip ahead.

Day 2

Arusha to Tarangire National Park – Land of Elephants

After breakfast, depart Arusha at 8:00 AM and drive to Tarangire National Park, approximately 2 hours. This shorter drive is intentional – it's manageable for children. Tarangire is famous for its massive elephant herds and ancient baobab trees – sights that will amaze both parents and kids. Upon arrival, begin your first family game drive, searching for elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and the many bird species. The Tarangire River attracts wildlife year-round. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush – a fun adventure for children. In the late afternoon, exit the park and drive to your family-friendly lodge for dinner and overnight. Your guide will keep children engaged with fun facts and animal-tracking tips throughout the day.

Day 3

Tarangire to Central Serengeti – Into the Endless Plains

After breakfast, depart for the legendary Serengeti National Park. The drive takes you through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with stunning views of the crater rim – a perfect photo opportunity for the family. Your guide will break up the trip with stops for snacks, bathroom breaks, and short walks to keep children comfortable. As you descend into the Serengeti ecosystem, the landscape opens up into endless plains. Your first game drive begins as you enter the park, immediately searching for lions, elephants, and giraffes. Arrive at your family-friendly lodge or camp in the central Seronera area by late afternoon. Settle in, and prepare for two full days of family exploration ahead.

Family Travel Advice

Depending on the number of people in your family, the price per person decreases due to sharing of facilities – sharing rooms, sharing the vehicle, and sharing the guide. This can significantly reduce the cost for you and your family. The more family members, the better the value. We have professional guides who will spot animals and explain everything in kid-friendly ways – your children will not only be happy with this safari but will also love the Zanzibar experience.

Day 4

First Full Day Serengeti – Family Wildlife Adventure

Rise early for a sunrise game drive – this is when predators are most active, and children love the adventure of being out before dawn. Your guide will make it exciting, pointing out "hidden" animals and teaching tracking skills. The golden morning light transforms the landscape, and you'll have the best chance to spot lions on the hunt or leopards in trees. Return to camp for a hearty breakfast, then head out again for more exploration. Your guide carries a picnic lunch, so you can eat wherever the wildlife takes you – perhaps by the Seronera River, watching hippos wallow. This full day in the Serengeti is designed to be flexible – if children need a break, you can return to camp for rest. The pace adapts to your family.

Day 5

Second Full Day Serengeti – Deeper Exploration

With a second full day in the Serengeti, you have the luxury of exploring at your family's pace. Today you might venture to different areas, searching for animals you haven't seen yet. Your guide will share fun facts and stories that keep children engaged – the way a zebra foal recognizes its mother by stripe pattern, how lions communicate across the plains, why elephants flap their ears. If your children are interested, you can add a Maasai village visit (additional cost) – a cultural experience that many families treasure. Alternatively, if the kids need a rest day, you can enjoy the lodge's pool and take shorter game drives. The flexibility of a private family safari means you choose what works best for your family.

Day 6

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater Rim

After a final morning game drive in the Serengeti, begin your trip toward the Ngorongoro Highlands. The drive is scenic and your guide will make stops for snacks, photos, and bathroom breaks to keep children comfortable. Stop at the crater rim viewpoint – even children are awestruck by the sight. The crater stretches below, a vast natural arena where 25,000 animals live. From here, descend to your family-friendly lodge on the crater rim or in Karatu for dinner and overnight. The lodge has a swimming pool – perfect for children to enjoy before dinner. Anticipate your descent into the crater tomorrow morning.

In just a few hours, your family is likely to see lions, hyenas, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, and hippos – often all before lunch. The crater floor's open grasslands make wildlife spotting easy for children. Enjoy a picnic lunch by the hippo pool, watching these massive creatures wallow and graze – kids love this spot. After your final game drive, ascend the crater walls and return to your lodge. This is one of the most wildlife-dense places on Earth, and your family will have experienced it together.

After breakfast, begin your trip back to Arusha. The drive takes approximately 4 hours, with stops as needed for your family. Upon arrival at Arusha Airport, you'll board a flight to Zanzibar – approximately 1.5 hours. The aerial views of the Serengeti plains and then the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean as you approach Zanzibar are spectacular – children will love seeing the island from above. Upon arrival at Zanzibar Airport, our representative will be waiting to transfer your family to your beach resort in Nungwi or Kendwa – family-friendly properties with swimming pools, kids' menus, and direct beach access. Settle in, take your first walk on the beach, and enjoy a family dinner with your toes in the sand.

Lounge by the pool, build sandcastles on the beach, or take a dip in the warm turquoise waters – children will love the safe swimming beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa. For families seeking adventure, optional activities include snorkeling (kids love seeing tropical fish), a spice tour (educational and smelly fun), or a visit to Stone Town. We particularly recommend a sunset dhow cruise – a traditional sailing boat that takes you along the coast as the sun sets, often with snacks and drinks included. Dinner is at your leisure at one of the resort's restaurants or a beachfront café.

You'll be transferred to Zanzibar Airport for your onward flight home, taking with you memories that will last a lifetime – of lions on the Serengeti plains, elephants beneath baobab trees, and turquoise waters lapping at white sand beaches. Your children will return to school with stories that will amaze their friends.

"I was nervous about taking our three children (ages 6, 9, and 12) on safari. But our guide was amazing – he kept them engaged with fun facts, taught them how to spot animals, and made every game drive exciting. The lodges were perfect for families, and Zanzibar was the ideal way to end our trip. The kids still talk about the lions we saw!"

The Ultimate Family Adventure: Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday

"Traveling to Tanzania with your family requires special care – especially with kids. Children need more attention than adults, from kid-friendly accommodations to coordinated adventures that ensure happiness and privacy for your family. This package is designed with all of that in mind."

You and your family want to travel to Tanzania – I have advice for you. You are at the right operator. A family safari and Zanzibar holiday Tanzania is one of the most rewarding experiences you can share with your children, but it needs careful planning. Kids require special care – different from adults. You need accommodations suitable for children, coordinated adventures that keep everyone happy, and the privacy your family deserves.

This is our recommended family package. By combining a Northern Tanzania safari with a Zanzibar beach holiday, you'll experience two completely different destinations – the wild savannah and the turquoise Indian Ocean. This package includes 1 day of arrival, 6 days of safari, and 3 days in Zanzibar, including the day you fly back home. Two destinations, different landscapes, different experiences – all in one unforgettable family trip.

Why 6 days on safari? This package has 6 days on safari specifically to avoid long drives for kids. Having more days on safari means we can break up the drives, take more breaks, and maintain a comfortable pace that keeps children happy. Rushed itineraries with long driving days are not good for families – we've designed this with exactly that in mind.

Why Mid-Range to Luxury Accommodation Is Best for Families

Family-friendly lodge with swimming pool Family room with comfortable beds

When traveling with children, where you stay matters enormously. Here's why mid-range to luxury accommodations are the best fit for a family safari and Zanzibar holiday Tanzania – and why we do not recommend budget camping for families:

  • Safety and security: Mid-range and luxury lodges have secure perimeters, well-lit pathways, and staff trained to ensure child safety. Budget camping involves shared facilities and less secure environments – not ideal when you're watching over children.
  • Family rooms and connecting rooms: These properties offer family rooms or connecting rooms, essential for parents who need to keep children close. Budget camping typically offers only basic tents with no room options.
  • Reliable hot water and electricity: After a day of game drives, children need warm baths and you need to charge devices. Mid-range lodges provide this consistently. Budget camping cannot guarantee either.
  • Swimming pools: Most mid-range and luxury lodges have swimming pools – a lifesaver for entertaining children during the midday heat when game drives pause.
  • Kid-friendly food options: Better properties have restaurants that can prepare simple meals for picky eaters. Budget camping involves basic camp cooking with limited options.
  • Mosquito protection: All our recommended properties provide mosquito nets and have screened windows – non-negotiable for children's health.

Our recommendation: Invest in mid-range to luxury accommodation for your family safari. The extra cost is worth it for the safety, comfort, and peace of mind you'll gain. Your children will rest better, eat better, and enjoy the experience more – which means you will too.
